August 2000. The Russian nuclear submarine, Kursk, sinks to the bottom of the Barents Sea after one of its torpedoes explodes. Twenty-three submariners manage to survive and take refuge in the only compartment to remain intact. While they fight to survive on board, on land their families struggle desperately against political obstacles. A race against the clock ensues, but the Russian authorities are reluctant to accept the international assistance offered.
