SYNOPSIS

Suède, 1931. Le port d’Adalen est paralysé par une grève. Kjell, fils de docker, s’éprend d’Anna, fille du directeur de l’usine. Leur amour naissant se heurte bientôt à la violence de l’Histoire. Une fresque romanesque, où destin intime et tragédie collective se rejoignent dans une saisissante beauté plastique.

Sweden, 1931. The port of Ådalen is paralyzed by a strike. Kjell, the son of a dockworker, falls in love with Anna, the daughter of the factory manager. Their budding love is soon pitted against the violence of history. A sweeping drama in which personal fate and collective tragedy converge in a strikingly vivid and beautiful narrative.

D’abord critique, il apporte un souffle nouveau au cinéma suédois avec Le Péché suédois et Le Quartier du corbeau. Il se fait ensuite connaître dans le monde entier grâce à des films historiques à l’esthétique très travaillée et à la forte dimension politique, comme Elvira Madigan (1967), Adalen 31 (1969) ou Joe Hill (1971). Il signe également le remarquable polar Un flic sur le toit (1976).

Mario Monicelli (1915-2010)

 

Initially a critic, he breathed new energy into Swedish cinema with The Pram and Raven’s End. He then gained worldwide acclaim with historical films featuring a highly polished aesthetic and a strong political dimension, such as Elvira Madigan (1967), Adalen 31 (1969), and Joe Hill (1971). He also directed the remarkable crime thriller The Man on the Roof (1976).
