SYNOPSIS

À la fin du XIXe siècle, trois jeunes entrepreneurs rêvent de bâtir une usine textile dans une ville en pleine industrialisation. Leur ascension les entraîne dans un univers où règnent l’argent, le pouvoir et la spéculation. Une fresque baroque, flamboyante et résolument opératique.

Figure majeure du cinéma polonais, il explore les blessures de l’Histoire et les déchirements de son pays. De Kanal (1957) à Cendres et diamants (1958), en passant par L’Homme de marbre (1976), son œuvre conjugue souffle romanesque, engagement politique et mémoire collective. Avec Danton (1982) et Katyn (2007), il inscrit aussi le destin polonais dans une vaste réflexion universelle sur la liberté.

Andrzej Wajda (1926-2016)

 

A major figure in Polish cinema, he explored the wounds of history and the divisions within his country. From Kanal (1957) and Ashes and Diamonds (1958) to The Man of Marble (1976), his work combined sweeping storytelling, political commitment and collective memory. With Danton (1982) and Katyn (2007), he also placed Poland’s destiny within a broader, universal reflection on freedom.
