Synopsis

In 1887, Queen Victoria is an elderly woman worn down by her 50-year reign. She gets to know a young Indian servant who gradually becomes her confidant and spiritual guide, something which displeases her entourage. A caustic look at Victorian society and its prejudices.

Biography

Stephen Frears (1941-)

First coming to notice in 1985 with My Beautiful Laundrette, and his reputation further established by the global success of Dangerous Liaisons in 1988, he has skilfully presented his vision of the world in a work tinged with humour, provocation and irony. His films include Prick Up Your Ears (1987), The Grifters (1990), Hero (1992), Mary Reilly (1996), The Van (1996), The Queen (2006), Tamara Drewe (2010), Philomena (2013).
