In the spring of 1936, young unemployed David leaves Liverpool and his fiancée behind to fight Fascism in Spain. Almost by chance, he enlists in the international brigades fighting for the POUM, a Trotskyite militia. He trains as a militiaman and takes part in his first battles. Little by little, he will discover the fratricidal political rifts that are crippling the Republican camp.
