Born in Rome in 1968, Matteo Garrone is the son of a theatre critic and a photographer. He first worked as a painter before making his first short film, Silhouette in 1996 for which he won Nanni Moretti’s Golden Sacher Award. In the same year, he shot his first long film, Terra di mezzo, in which the borders between real and fiction are blurred. He presents the daily life of immigrants in Rome, doing undeclared work and suffering from nostalgia for their homeland. His stylistic choices – hand-held shooting, seamless tracking shots, direct sound and long shots – made him a successor of neorealism. Filming crowds with Rosselli-style agility, Matteo Garrone knows how to impressively capture the most unusual urban atmospheres.
