Filming the 18th century
In 1715, Louis XIV died and the Enlightenment began. Europe was experiencing a period of great political, artistic, philosophical and scientific turmoil. A strong desire for change culminated in 1789 with the French Revolution, that had an impact on the whole of Europe. Many filmmakers were inspired by this period, where the old and the new collided, where the richest rubed shoulders with the poorest, and where baroque and rigour clashed. This selection of 12 films takes us on a fascinating journey through time, between reality and historical fantasy.
