Approaching fifty, Simon is a distinguished violinist whose career is faltering. In the absence of anything better, he ends up in a school teaching violin to a group of 11 and 12 year-olds. His rigid methods do nothing to facilitate his relationship with the difficult children. But his contact with Arnold and his classmates gradually helps him to reconnect with the joys of music and to overcome all obstacles, culminating in them performing at the Philharmonic.
